Major General Godfrey Chanakira declared National Hero

Major General (Retd) Godfrey Chanakira who died last week at a local hospital has been declared a National Hero by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

HARARE – Major General (Retd) Godfrey Chanakira who died last week at a local hospital has been declared a National Hero by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In a statement issued by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda on Monday, President Mnangagwa conferred hero status to Chanakira together with three other deceased officials.

“His Excellency the President, Dr ED. Mnangagwa, has conferred National Hero and Provincial Hero status to the following deceased:

“The late Major General (Retd) Godfrey Chanakira whose Chimurenga name was Cde Garikai Musavengana who had been granted a State-assisted funeral, has now been declared National Hero after further consultations. Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.

“Cde Francis Komboni Gondo, whose Chimurenga name was Cde Elias Hondo, has been declared a Provincial Hero.

“Cde Charles Savanhu whose Chimurenga name was Advance Chimurenga has been declared a Provincial Hero.

“Former Finance Minister and Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Mount Darwin East, Cde Christopher Kuruneri, who died at the weekend in South Africa, has been declared a Provincial Hero,” Dr Sibanda said.

Dr Sibanda also announced that the late Chief Denis Nhlamba has ben granted a state-assisted funeral with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga set to grace the occasion.

“Chief Denis Ndlovu Nhlamba of Garanyemba area in Gwanda who passed on at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) on Saturday has been granted a State-Assisted funeral. Vice President Dr CGDN Chiwenga will represent the President at the funeral of the late Chief,” the statement reads.
