JOHANNESBURG – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has called for the immediate resignation of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana amid sexual assault allegations against him.
Godongwana is being investigated for alleged sexual harassment against a member of staff at a Skukuza hotel in Mpumalanga earlier this month while on holiday in Kruger National Park with his wife.
The woman accused him of caressing her while massaging him.
On Tuesday during an EFF press briefing, Malema said: “These allegations, as we speak today, have not been denied by the minister of Finance…”
Police have questioned Godongwana but he has not yet been charged.
Malema said Godongwana’s execution of ministerial duties following the allegations against him was a reflection of the current government.
“It also reflects the fact that we are run by a government – which has no respect for women. It is the government of a finance minister who abuses women in their workplace.”
He said if Godongwana had any respect for women, he would have quit.
“Enoch Godongwana’s retention in power is a thorn in the side of the 9,516 rape victims who opened cases at police stations between April and June 2022.”
The decision to charge and prosecute the finance minister now rests with national law enforcement, with police handing over their cases.
