KORHOGO, Ivory Coast – In an intense Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) clash, Mali secured a crucial 2-0 victory over South Africa, claiming the top spot in Group E.
The match showcased moments of drama, including a missed penalty by Bafana Bafana‘s Percy Tau and a spirited comeback by Les Aigles.
The turning point of the game occurred in the 18th minute when South Africa was awarded a penalty after a VAR check revealed an elbow in the face of striker Evidence Makgopa by Mali’s Sikou Niakate.
However, Percy Tau failed to capitalize on the opportunity, blasting the ball wide of the target.
Mali’s captain, Hamari Traore, broke the deadlock after an hour of play, capitalizing on a rebound after South Africa‘s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved a curling free kick from Sekou Koita.
Lassine Sinayoko extended Mali’s lead six minutes later, securing the victory.
Traore’s goal showcased quick reflexes as he pounced on the loose ball from close range.
Sinayoko’s goal followed soon after, with a well-executed finish from close range after eluding two defensive challenges.

Despite South Africa dominating the first-half exchanges and Tau forcing a good save from Mali’s goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, the missed penalty proved costly for Bafana Bafana.
Les Aigles had their share of missed opportunities in the second half, with Koita and Amadou Haidara squandering chances.
However, the two-goal burst secured Mali’s position at the top of the Group E standings.
In the other Group E match, Namibia stunned Tunisia with a late winner from winger Deon Hotto, creating further excitement and unpredictability in the group.
Looking ahead, Les Aigles will face Tunisia on Saturday, while Bafana Bafana takes on Namibia on Sunday, both matches to be played in Korhogo.
The results from these upcoming clashes will play a crucial role in determining the group standings and advancing teams to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations.
