LONDON – In a dramatic comeback, Manchester City overcame a 1-0 deficit against Everton on Wednesday, securing a 3-1 victory that brought them within five points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s side, determined to clinch an unprecedented fourth consecutive English top-flight title, displayed resilience at Goodison Park.

Former City player Jack Harrison put Everton ahead with a first-half strike, but Phil Foden’s rocket shot in the 53rd minute leveled the score.

Julian Alvarez then secured the lead for the visitors with a penalty kick, and Bernardo Silva sealed the deal in the closing minutes after an error by Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

Guardiola, acknowledging the team’s special abilities, stated, “We have standards to keep. That makes us have more responsibility so the standards cannot go down.”

He added, “They showed again how special they are. We know after six games with just one win the people were asking, which is normal because it is all about results, but we are close.”

Manchester City’s victory places them in fourth spot with a game in hand over Liverpool, who lead with 42 points.

Arsenal, trailing Liverpool by two points, will face West Ham on Thursday.

City entered the match following their Club World Cup triumph, the fifth trophy in their extraordinary 2023.

Despite their recent struggles in the Premier League, Guardiola’s men showcased their dominance against Everton, forcing them onto the back foot.
