HARARE – An ordinary walk in the CBD turned into a horror story for Tanatswa Muchenje (23) who was assaulted and arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police officers.

Muchenje was walking in Harare’s central business district along Robson Manyika Avenue on January 17, at around 4pm when she was assaulted by a police officer in civilian clothes.

The Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) law student approached a police officer in uniform to report the assault but was shocked when the officer told her that she has been beaten up for loitering in the city.

She protested the injustice but was immediately arrested and taken to Harare Central Police Station where she was initially charged with undermining the authority of a police officer.

The charge was soon changed two more times to inciting public violence and finally failure to wear a face mask.

Faced with the prospect of paying a fine of 500 RTGS or spending the night in the police cells, she elected to pay the fine under protest and was released.

Noble Chihanhu, from the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, attended to her and assisted in getting the details of the police officers to lay formal complaints against the police for unlawful conduct.
