BURNLEY – Manchester City‘s Premier League title defense got off to a successful start with a convincing 3-0 victory against Burnley, but the celebrations were dampened by an injury blow to star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian international suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury that could see him sidelined for several weeks.
Erling Haaland was the hero for City, scoring two goals, while Rodri sealed the victory with the third goal, securing a perfect start to the season for Pep Guardiola‘s side.
However, the injury to De Bruyne took some of the shine off the win.
The midfielder had previously suffered a hamstring tear during City’s Champions League final triumph against Inter Milan just two months ago.
Guardiola expressed his concern about De Bruyne’s injury, stating, “He was injured again unfortunately… He will be out for a while. It depends on the magnitude but will be a few weeks out.”
Despite the injury setback, Guardiola remained optimistic about his team’s performance and the challenges ahead.
“We are still not in our best (physical) form but we have to try to not drop many points in that period,” he commented.
Guardiola also acknowledged that other teams would find it tough to play at Burnley’s stadium, making the victory even more satisfying.

Erling Haaland’s impact on the match was significant, as he continued his prolific goal-scoring form from the previous season.
Haaland scored the opening goal in just over three minutes, capitalizing on a well-executed corner play involving De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden.
Burnley, under the guidance of former City player Vincent Kompany, put up a resilient fight but lacked a clinical finisher to convert their chances.
Despite a strong performance, they were unable to match City’s goal-scoring prowess.
Kompany, reflecting on the game, commented, “There were a lot of periods of the game where we did ourselves proud.”
As the match progressed, City tightened their grip on the game.
Rodri, who had been instrumental in City’s previous Champions League victory, sealed the win with a close-range goal, continuing his impactful contributions.
Burnley’s frustration culminated in stoppage time when Anass Zaroury received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Kyle Walker, adding to the woes of a difficult night for the home team.
The victory marked a promising start to Manchester City’s campaign to secure an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.
However, De Bruyne’s injury will undoubtedly raise concerns as the team navigates a competitive season.
