MASVINGO – The city of Masvingo has refused firefighting vehicles purchased by the Belarusian government for local authorities, saying firefighting equipment is not a priority at the moment.
The decision to reject the central government directive was taken at the meeting of the Council’s Finance and General Affairs Committee.
The fire tenders were sourced from Belarus under a controversial government deal orchestrated by Local Government minister July Moyo.
The committee expressed concern that fire trucks are not a priority for the town of Masvingo. The city of Masvingo needs garbage trucks, dump trucks, bulldozers and ambulances.
The committee suggested that government considers procuring two garbage trucks, a dump truck, a grader and an ambulance for the town of Masvingo using devolution funds instead of fire trucks.
