HARARE – Police have launched a manhunt for more than 70 MDC Alliance supporters who took part in a voter registration drive in Chitungwiza over the weekend.
Seven activists were arrested and five of them were given Z$6,000 bail each by Chitungwiza Judge Sheunesu Matova yesterday and ordered to report to Zengeza Police Station once a week.
Among those arrested were youths aged 16 and 17 who were placed in the custody of their parents.
They are accused of attending a public meeting with the intention of promoting public violence.
Zanu PF district elections are currently taking place in all four districts of Mashonaland West Province, while opposition members are being persecuted.
The elections started on a high note, despite the rain which hampered the movement of voters.
The province’s outgoing leader, Cde Abia Mujeri, said the elections went well.
Elections are underway in Makonde, Zvimba, Kadoma and Sanyati districts, with various members of the Politburo, Central Committee and District Coordinating Committee overseeing the elections.
