HARARE – Police have banned the MDC Alliance demonstration set for Thursday, citing the opposition party’s failure to meet the requirements of the Public Order and Security Act.
The development comes after authorities said they feared the MDC wanted to counter a planned October 25 anti-sanctions march by Zanu PF.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the same police used batons to disperse a small group of activists protesting outside Harare Magistrates’ Court over the death of a street vendor who died in jail, allegedly after being tortured by police and prison authorities’ refusal to see him let the doctors.
Police arrested three protesters who chanted “ndimi makauraya (you are the killer)” on Friday night after the death in prison of 29-year-old Hilton Tamangani.
