HARARE – The opposition party Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Thokozani Khupe on Friday celebrated the 21st anniversary of its formation in style by calling for Zimbabweans from all corners of the earth to join it in its journey to the new Zimbabwe.

In a press footage depicting him of a Presidential figure, the party secretary general Douglas Mwonzora said the MDC was formed in September 1999 to finish the work of the liberation war which Zanu PF had failed to complete.

Mwonzora who has recently come under fire from a number of opposition supporters after recently crossing the floor from the rival faction, the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa, said the labour backed movement still stands for its values of ushering in a social democratic space in Zimbabwe.

Our great movement, the Movement for Democratic Change was formed in 1999 out of three national movements, the labour, students and constitutional movements. This was in response to the social and economic quagmire to which our people had been consigned by the totalitarian regime of Zanu PF and the enemies of democracy.  While the liberation struggle had been waged on the promise of social and economic justice as well as the political equality of our people, the majority of Zimbabwean people soon found themselves totally marginalized, impoverished, oppressed and brutalized. Therefore our party was formed to complete the unfinished business of the liberation struggle. Our democratic struggle is predicated on certain indelible and timeless values. We stand for full and unfettered democracy, constitutionalism and the rule of law. We believe in the full equality of all our people irrespective of race, color, creed, place of origin as well as gender.  We therefore state categorically that the evils of tribalism, regionalism and ethnic prejudice have no place in this struggle. Our principal goal is to make Zimbabwe a happy, free, just nation.
