LYON – Stade de Reims midfielder Marshall Munetsi has been awarded the prestigious 2022/23 Citizen Player Trophy in recognition of his exceptional off-field contributions within the French Ligue 1.
Throughout the season, Munetsi has not only excelled on the pitch but has also dedicated himself to uplifting marginalised communities, making him a shining beacon in the league.
The 26-year-old footballer was presented with the award during a vibrant ceremony held on Sunday evening in France.
Expressing his gratitude, Munetsi highlighted the significance of the trophy and its representation of helping others beyond the realm of football.
“For me, this is a special trophy because it goes beyond football. It’s about assisting those in need, supporting underprivileged children, and disabled individuals. I am truly grateful that football players are also involved in changing lives outside the sport,” he stated.
Earlier this year, Munetsi disclosed his philanthropic efforts, revealing that he donates 10% of his salary to support less-privileged children in Zimbabwe.
Additionally, he has generously supplied football kits to a school in Mabvuku, his childhood neighbourhood.
Remarkably, Munetsi’s contract with Reims includes a unique provision where the club donates 100 euros to his foundation for every kilometer he covers on the pitch during a match.
This exceptional clause demonstrates the commitment and synergy between Mune-tsi’s sporting career and his desire to make a positive impact off the field.

Stade de Reims manager Will Still also commended Munetsi for his extraordinary character and contribution to the team.
He went on to praise the midfielder as not only an exceptional footballer but also an exemplary human being.
“He proves his importance within our team, but beyond that, I genuinely believe you won’t find a better human being on earth than Marshall Munetsi. He is an outstanding individual and an excellent football player.
“He has the ability to make everyone around him understand that life encompasses more than just football. Having him in our locker room is key, as he inspires everyone to be the best version of themselves,” Still affirmed.
Marshall Munetsi’s dedication to uplifting marginalized communities and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others serves as a remarkable example for football players worldwide.
His Citizen Player Trophy recognition is a testament to the positive impact that athletes can have off the field, and it is hoped that his efforts will inspire fellow professionals to use their influence for the betterment of society.
