JOHANNESBURG – The music world is mourning the untimely loss of multi-award-winning South African artist Zahara, born Bulelwa Mkutukana, who passed away on Monday night at a private hospital in Johannesburg.
The renowned Loliwe hitmaker, aged 33, had been battling liver complications, leading to her hospitalization two weeks ago.
Zaha-ra’s fiancé, Mpho Xaba, was reportedly at her bedside when she passed away just before 9 pm.
The news was confirmed by a source close to the family, who stated, “The family will release a statement soon. She was with Mpho when she passed away.”
Oyama Dyosiba, the spokesperson for the Mkutukana family and Zahara’s cousin, expressed difficulty reaching Xaba on Monday night.
“I am getting calls from everywhere. I am in Cape Town and I am doing my best to get hold of Mpho. I can’t get hold of him,” said Dyosiba.
Zahara’s health struggles had been kept private within the family, but a week ago, the family confirmed her hospitalization for liver complications.
They issued a statement appreciating the support and expressing concern over the spread of inaccurate information on the internet.
The family statement read, “Unfortunately, even though our daughter’s hospitalisation has been of strict confidentiality within our family and close friends, that hasn’t stopped the spread of disingenuous information on the internet. We want to stress that any reliable information regarding Zahara’s health will be communicated via her official social media platforms or by herself.”
Zahara’s family from East London had traveled to Johannesburg to support her and Xaba during this challenging time.
Despite efforts, Zaha-ra’s condition deteriorated, leading to her transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the private hospital.
