LAGOS — Nigeria’s entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of veteran Nollywood actor John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr Ibu, at the age of 62.
The somber news was confirmed by Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, who expressed profound sadness over Okafor’s demise, attributing it to a cardiac arrest.
“I announce with [a] deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it,” Rollas conveyed on Saturday, signaling the end of an era for one of Nollywood’s most iconic figures.
Okafor gained continental acclaim two decades ago with his stellar performance in the film “Mr Ibu,” which not only catapulted him to stardom but also earned him the enduring nickname that became synonymous with his comedic genius.
Throughout his illustrious career, Okafor graced the screens in numerous Nollywood productions, leaving an indelible mark on the industry with his distinctive talent.
From “Keziah” to “9 Wives” and “Mr Ibu in London,” his versatility and comedic timing endeared him to audiences far and wide.
“Rest well, sir,” expressed actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie, paying homage to the beloved actor.
Okafor’s health challenges had been a matter of public concern since last year when reports surfaced of his medical struggles.
In November, he underwent the amputation of one of his legs, a procedure necessitated by health complications.
Fans rallied around him, contributing to a crowdfunding initiative to cover his medical expenses.
Tragically, Okafor’s final days were marred by family turmoil.
His son Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma were arrested in January on suspicion of financial impropriety, accused of unlawfully accessing funds totaling $60,700 from his accounts.
The duo, currently awaiting their next court appearance scheduled for 11 March, have remained silent following their arrest.
Describing Okafor’s last years as “tumultuous,” Nigeria’s Punch newspaper recounted the actor’s claims of surviving multiple poisoning attempts, further highlighting the challenges he faced in his final chapter.
As the Nigerian entertainment industry bids farewell to one of its brightest stars, Okafor leaves behind a rich legacy and a void that will be deeply felt by fans and colleagues alike.
His memory will endure through his timeless contributions to Nollywood and the laughter he brought to countless lives.
Local reports indicate that Okafor is survived by his 13 children, marking the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most beloved entertainers.
