Police stop CCC leader Chamisa from planting trees

HARARE – A tree-planting ceremony planned for Thursday by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa in Gutu, Masvingo province, has been halted by the police for ridiculous reasons.

Police stated that the reason for the banning of the tree planting ceremony which Chamisa was set to host is because of a gathering by an unidentified political party scheduled for the region same day.

Speaking on the subject, Joachim Mambure, the police officer in charge of the district of Masvingo East, stated that it is their responsibility to ensure that there is peace during events, therefore having all necessary security personnel on hand is necessary.

“We can’t allow two parties to hold political gatherings in the same ward on the same date. There will be violence. Our duty as police is to maintain peace and order; hence we had to stop one party from holding the meeting,” Mambure was quoted by NewsDay.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere blasted the ruling party Zanu PF accusing it of influencing police to obstruct their party activities.

The tree-planting ceremony was set to take place in Gutu North constituency’s Ward 4 at the Takaona household.
