MAPUTO – President Filipe Nyusi presented the Mozambique Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Medal to 1,733 combatants on Friday as part of the commemorations of Heroes’ Day staged in Maputo.
President Nyusi, claims that the commemoration of Heroes’ Day comes at a time when Mozambique is dealing with significant difficulties, including the war against terrorism, cholera (with more than 3000 cases in two months), and COVID-19.
The development of the Mozambican judicial system, success in preventing and responding to COVID-19, the expansion of the arts and letters were also noted as examples of citizens who stood out in other fields of knowledge.
Nyusi also honoured outstanding citizens whose lives were characterised by arduous, productive, and creative work, aiming at the social, material, and cultural well-being of all Mozambicans.
The Mozambican president presided over the 2023 Heroes’ Day main festivities, which were held in Praça dos Heróis in Maputo and held simultaneously in all of the Mozambican provinces.
In his speech, Nyusi emphasised on the importance of peace in driving the development of the troubled southern African nation.
President Nyusi, assured that the Defense and Security Forces (FDS), which operate in the North Operational Theater (TON), continue to initiate combative action.
The Mozambican FDS, with the support of the local force and military missions from Rwanda and the SADC, is aiming at fully restoring security in the northern region of the province of Cabo Delgado.
He added that there are currently only a few small pockets of terrorist attacks in Capo Delgado.
This acknowledgement, in spite of the progress that has been made in this area, indicates to President Nyusi that more needs to be done to restore genuine peace and serenity to the affected community.
