JOHANNESBURG — President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Thursday that Sehlahle Fannie Masemola will be the country’s new National Police Commissioner.

The presidency said Masemola’s appointment as police commissioner will ensure continuity in the police department’s highest post after the departure of Khehlas Sitole.

“General Masemola was a Deputy Commissioner of Police with an outstanding record of policing throughout South Africa, including helping to de-escalate violence in KwaZulu-Natal following our first elections Democratic, where he was based.

“General Masemola also brings to this position his experience of drastically reducing cash heists during the period around 2016,” Ramaphosa said.

Sitole agreed to the early termination of his contract with the president last month.

The president said Masemola said he was up to the task of leading the country’s police force.
