Russia claims Ukraine is torturing prisoners of war

MOSCOW — Russia said on Tuesday it was investigating the torture of Russian soldiers detained in Ukraine and released in late June as part of a prisoner swap with Kyiv.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which investigates serious crimes, said in a statement that it was “checking the facts about the inhumane treatment of prisoners of Russian soldiers in Ukraine.”

Last week, Moscow and Kyiv exchanged 144 prisoners of war each, the largest exchange since the start of Moscow’s Ukrainian campaign on February 24.

The Russian committee said soldiers in Moscow told investigators about “the violence they had suffered”.

According to his testimony, one of the soldiers said that Ukrainian doctors treated him without anesthesia and that he was “beaten and electrocuted in captivity”.

The soldier reportedly said he was left without food or water for days.

Another injured Russian soldier, whose left was amputated, said he was badly beaten and angered by his injury by Ukrainian doctors, the statement said.

The statements of the released Russian soldiers are examples of “violations of the Geneva Convention on prisoners of war”, the Russian committee said.
