MOSCOW – In a tragic incident in Ukraine, Russian missile strikes on a mail depot in the northeastern Kharkiv region have resulted in the deaths of at least six postal workers, while 17 others were injured.

The attack occurred on Saturday, further escalating the ongoing conflict in the region.

The victims, aged between 19 and 42, suffered shrapnel wounds and blast injuries, as per regional governor Oleg Sinegubov.

Seven of the injured individuals were in serious condition, and efforts by medical professionals to save their lives continue.

President Volodymyr Zelensky shared a video on social media showing a severely damaged warehouse, surrounded by debris and a container bearing the logo of Nova Poshta, the Ukrainian postal operator.

Separately, Russian attacks on villages near the war-battered city of Bakhmut in Ukraine resulted in the deaths of at least two people on Sunday.

Both Ukraine and Russia are bracing for a challenging winter ahead, with Ukraine warning of renewed strikes on its energy infrastructure and Russia facing a Ukrainian counteroffensive aimed at regaining territory.

In the eastern Donetsk region, where intense fighting has been ongoing around the city of Avdiivka, President Zelensky stated that Ukraine’s positions in the area were “protected.”

Avdiivka has been a focal point of intense conflict recently as both sides vie for control. Despite numerous Russian attacks, Zelensky affirmed that their positions remained secure.

Avdiivka has been a symbol of Ukrainian resistance since 2014, having briefly fallen to Russian-backed separatists before being recaptured.

It lies in proximity to the Moscow-held city of Donetsk, the capital of the Donetsk region annexed by Russia in 2014.

Furthermore, Russian forces reported downing three missiles aimed at the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

The peninsula holds strategic importance for Russia’s offensive, serving as a supply route to southern Ukraine and a base for missile strikes from the sea.

In response, Ukraine claimed to have destroyed a guided missile and three drones launched by Russian forces.

The situation in the region remains precarious, with both sides engaged in hostilities as Ukraine vows to regain the annexed Crimea.
