ISLAMABAD – Shahbaz Sharif, the candidate of an alliance led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has been elected as the 24th prime minister of Pakistan following polling held by the National Assembly, announced the Speaker of the House, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
In Sunday’s polling, Sharif, who is also the president of PML-N, secured 201 votes out of the total 293 votes cast, declared Speaker Sadiq.
His sole competitor, Omar Ayub Khan, a joint candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and former Prime Minister Imran Khan‘s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, managed to secure 92 votes.
“With 201 votes, Shahbaz Sharif has been declared as the prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” announced Speaker Sadiq, affirming Sharif’s victory.

Shahbaz Sharif rises to the top
A total of 169 votes were required for victory in the division of the house election in the 336-member National Assembly.
Sharif garnered support from various parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, and other allies.
The election of Shahbaz Sharif comes after the formation of the new house following Pakistan’s general election held on 8 February 2024.
Earlier on Friday, members of the National Assembly elected Sadiq as the Speaker of the House and Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah as his deputy, marking the official commencement of parliamentary proceedings.
