Sikhala arrested over baby tweet, Chin’ono remanded in custody

HARARE – MDC Alliance deputy national chairperson Job Sikhala was arrested by the police at Harare Magistrates Court after attending trial of journalist Hopewell Chin’ono.

HARARE – MDC Alliance National Vice Chairperson, Job Sikhala has been arrested by police at Harare Magistrates’ Court after attending the trial of journalist Hopewell Chin’ono.

Sikhala, who was part of the legal team representing Chin’ono, was arrested for tweeting “fake news” about a baby who allegedly died on his mother’s back after being beaten by a police officer.

The baby would was allegedly hit by glass and not by a truncheon.

As a result, the police force launched a full-scale attack on Hopewell Chin’ono and Job Sikhala, who are seen by the state as government critics.

Earlier in court, journalist Chin’ono, who was arrested on Friday, was taken into custody after the judge ruled that speaking hours had expired.

Chin’ono will be back in court on Monday, January 11, according to his lawyer. The new lockdown rules state that court cases will not exceed 3 p.m.
