Sikhala’s nightmares continue as court denies exemption

A court in Harare on Friday denied opposition lawmaker Job Sikhala's request for an exemption in a case in which he is charged with hindering the administration of justice.

HARARE – A court in Harare on Friday denied opposition lawmaker Job Sikhala‘s request for an exemption in a case in which he is charged with hindering the administration of justice.

Jeremiah Bhamu and Harrison Nkomo, who are Sikhala’s lawyers, came before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, who denied his application.

The opposition lawmaker disputed the case’s facts, claiming they failed to reveal an offence.

Wiwa (as Job is affectionately called) said that he was being persecuted for his political views.

Gofa, though, asserted that the Zengeza West member of parliament had raised concerns that could be tried and that the allegations were clear.

The State requested that the case be remanded for trial on January 5 following the dismissal, but the lawyers of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) official objected to the postponement.

A marathon trial was later scheduled for Sikhala for December 29 as well as December 30 and January 3 of the following year.
