SuperSport United overpower Mamelodi Sundowns in league thriller

SuperSport United beat champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the DStv Premiership match played at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.

PRETORIA – SuperSport United beat champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the DStv Premiership match played at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.

Matsatsantsa faced Sundowns for the second week in the famed Tshwane Derby having lost 2-0 in MTN8 Cup last week.

SuperSport United took the lead after eight minutes when Thapelo Maseko tackled a low cross from Iqraam Rayners from the six yards out and struck home.

United doubled their lead just before half-time when an unmarked Bradley Grobler made a perfect delivery from Rayners while the Sundowns defense took a nap.

Masandawana attempted to get back into the game with Neo Maema launching a series of shots in the second half but a resolute George Chigova made sure it bred frustrations for the visitors.

Sundowns notched a consolation goal in the added time of second half through in-form Ethiopian player Abubeker Nasir as goalkeeper Chigova lapsed in concentration but it was too late to cause a damage.

After the game, Mamelodi Sundowns co-manager Manqoba Mngqithi admitted that his charges were simply blunt in front of goal against SuperSport United.

“I just think we were very wasteful today, first half we created a lot of chances, far more chances than what we created in the previous match,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV in post match interview.

“But we were just not clinical enough and very lethargic defensively, allowing crosses to come into the box and still not take the people that are on the far side,” he said.
