ELDORET, Kenya – Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat, a prominent figure in the world of international athletics, has been found dead in Eldoret, Kenya.
The 34-year-old, known for his achievements in the 3,000m steeplechase, was discovered in a car on the outskirts of the Rift Valley town on Saturday night.
Local police commander Stephen Okal revealed that Kiplagat’s body exhibited signs of a deep knife wound to his neck, indicating a fatal stabbing.
An investigation has been launched, and authorities are actively pursuing leads related to the tragic incident.
World Athletics expressed shock and sadness over Kiplagat’s untimely demise, issuing a statement on social media, saying, “We send our deepest condolences to his friends, family, teammates, and fellow athletes. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time.”
Peter Ogwang, the state minister for sports in Uganda, joined in mourning the loss of the accomplished athlete.
“I send my deepest condolences to his family, Ugandans, and the entire East Africa for the loss of such a budding athlete who has on several occasions represented us on the international scene,” Ogwang remarked.
Kiplagat’s athletic career spanned about 18 years, during which he made significant contributions to Ugandan athletics.

He clinched the silver medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2008 World Junior Championships and secured bronze at the Africa Championships in 2012.
His remarkable journey also included appearances at multiple Olympic Games and World Championships.
Reports indicate that Kiplagat had been training in the Eldoret area before heading to Uganda for upcoming athletics competitions.
His death follows the tragic killing of Kenyan distance running star Agnes Tirop in October 2021, who was found stabbed to death at the age of 25 in her home near Eldoret.
Tirop’s husband, Ibrahim Rotich, is currently on trial for her murder, denying the charges against him.
The Kenyan athlete, a double world 10,000m bronze medallist and 2015 world cross country champion, had garnered global recognition for her athletic prowess.
The shocking loss of Benjamin Kiplagat has left the sports community in mourning once again, emphasizing the vulnerability of athletes even beyond the race track.
Authorities are diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, seeking justice for the fallen Ugandan star.
