HARARE Multi-award-winning dancehall musician Winky D, known for his socially conscious lyrics, is gearing up to launch his latest album, Ghettocracy Score: Reading Through the Pages of Rokesheni.

The announcement of the album comes amidst political controversy surrounding Winky D, whose previous release, Eureka Eureka, sparked discussions on the socio-political landscape in Zimbabwe.

Winky D’s influence on the music scene is unmistakable, and his upcoming album has already generated considerable anticipation.

The launch is set to take place at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC), a venue the artist considers his “home ground.”

The dancehall sensation posted a video on social media, triggering a widespread trend and diverting public attention from the prevailing political discussions in the country.

Despite political debates surrounding him, Winky D remains an enigmatic figure with a strong social media presence and a dedicated fan base.

Eureka Eureka, released on December 31, 2022, became the center of attention due to its politically charged lyrics.

Songs like “Ibotso,” “Vafarisi,” and “Chauruka” addressed social, political, and economic developments, leading some to interpret them as a direct critique of the government.

The release drew parallels to historical instances where musicians like Leonard Zhakata and Thomas Mapfumo faced persecution for their perceived opposition to the establishment.

Winky D, however, maintained a stoic silence in the face of these controversies.

Despite challenges such as limited airplay on national radio and negative press, the artist garnered international recognition.

He clinched the Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste award at the Annual African Entertainment Awards, defeating renowned artists like Buju Banton and Popcaan.

The upcoming album launch, scheduled in partnership with Gateway Stream, a local entertainment company under Rainbow Tourism Group, has ignited significant excitement.

The event will feature performances by urban groover Ex Q, dancehall artists Killer T, Tocky Vibes, Master H, Bazooker, and Bling 4.

Fans eager to attend the launch can purchase standard tickets for US$20 or VIP access tickets for US$50.

Ghettocracy Score: Reading Through the Pages of Rokesheni is expected to mark a continuation of Winky D’s evolution in musical style, influenced by collaborations with diverse artists on his previous album.

As anticipation builds, questions linger about whether this release will follow the artist’s established pattern or introduce a new direction in his musical journey.

In the realm of Winky D’s brand, the launch and the upcoming year are poised to be defining moments, with expectations soaring high.
