RANDBURG, Gauteng – The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture has announced a memorial service to honor the late South African musician Zahara, whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana.

The service will take place on Thursday at the Rhema Bible Church in Randburg, Gauteng, from 11 am to 2 pm.

Zahara, a multi-award-winning artist, passed away on Monday at the age of 36, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

The cause of her death has not been disclosed, but she was reportedly admitted to the hospital last month due to liver complications.

In an Instagram post, her family shared the heartbreaking news: “It is with heavy hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, and friend, Zahara. She was a pure light, and an even purer heart, in this world – a beacon of hope, a gift, and a blessing to us and countless people around the world.”

Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Zizi Kodwa expressed his condolences, stating, “I am very saddened by the passing of [Zahara]. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry.” He also noted that the government had been supporting the family during this difficult time.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, addressing the media, remarked, “She was talented. She was vibrant. She was a wonderful composer. Zahara’s passing is unfortunate. We have been robbed of a great talent. She’s one of the best we have produced in the arts, and I am deeply saddened by her passing.”

TV presenter Katlego Maboe paid his tribute on social media by performing his rendition of one of Zahara’s popular songs, ‘Ndiza.’

The memorial service is expected to draw friends, fans, and members of the South African music fraternity to celebrate Zahara’s life and contributions to the country’s arts scene.
