HARARE – A 40-year-old street vendor at Harare’s popular Ximex shopping center has faced criminal harassment charges after claiming he had ties to the much-talked-about toe shoppers who allegedly have their severed human organs, according to volunteers against large sums of money.
David Kaseke appeared before Judge Meenal Narotam in Harare on Wednesday and was not asked to plead.
However, he voluntarily pleaded guilty, which was not recorded.
Instead, the judge granted him Z$8,000 bail and took him into custody on Friday for a hearing.
Kaseke got into trouble after his video claiming he was part of the mystery syndicate went viral.
In the video, Kaseke pretends to be an agent of the Ritualists.
The plaintiff in this case is the state.
The allegations state that at around 4:00 p.m. on May 27 this year, “the defendant was at his workplace and was approached by an H-Metro photographer who was following the trending story on human toes.”
Kaseke told the photographer that he was the toe buyers’ agent and was charging $200 as an agent fee.
He went on to say that the little toe can fetch between $25,000 and $30,000 and the big toe costs $75,000.
The video was posted on many social media platforms.
However, in later interviews, Kaseke claimed that he made these statements as jokes while under the influence of alcohol.
The state claimed that the defendant acted illegally.
The story of trading human toes for a fortune is all the rage in the country, but no one has volunteered to provide hard evidence that such a shocking trade in human organs took place.
The government, blamed for disastrous policies that pushed ordinary citizens to desperate heights, has continued to deny such incidents.
