Zondo under fire after granting Chris Hani’s killer parole

South Africa's Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has come under fire from Chris Hani's widow Limpho Hani, who claims that he has failed the nation.

PRETORIA – South Africa’s Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has come under fire from Chris Hani‘s widow Limpho Hani, who claims that he has failed the nation.

This comes after a majority ruling by the Constitutional Court on Monday, which was written by Zondo and effectively resulted in the release of Janusz Walus, the assassin of Chris Hani.

Following Justice Minister Ronald Lamola‘s refusal of Walus’ parole application in 2020 due to the gravity of his crime, the Constitutional Court rendered its decision which is likely to send tongues wagging.

Walus attempted to have Lamola’s ruling reviewed by the Pretoria High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal, but to no avail until Monday when the minister’s decision was deemed irrational by the Constitutional Court.

Lamola, who is aspiring to be the ANC deputy president at the upcoming party congress has ten days to grant Walus parole, as per the court’s order in his capacity as Justice minister.
