HARARE – Mayor Jacob Mafume, arrested by the state for abuse of power, is believed to be ill and showing all symptoms of COVID19.

The youthful MDC Alliance councillor who was elected Mayor last year before being arrested a few months later is said to be having difficulties with breathing.

MDC Alliance Vice President Tendai Biti tweeted the news of Mafume’s illness and called for prayers.

“Think of Jacob Mafume. He is in very poor condition. A court had given him time to undergo a medical examination. We will pray for the best,” Biti wrote.

Mafume is being held in an overcrowded cell. A cell designed for a maximum of 30 people would have more than 64 inmates, with some sleeping on the floor.

The mayor is said to have lost his taste and only drink water, while he has also been suffering from body aches of late as his health in prison continues to deteriorate.
