HARARE – CAPS United defended for their lives to settle for a goalless draw against Black Rhinos in a Castle Lager Premiership football match played at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Makepekepe played the large part of the match with 10-man after defender Marshall Machazane saw red in the second-half.

The financially troubled former Cup Kings, who are still recovering from one of their worst spells after suffering seven straight defeats recently, have now racked up four points from their last two games.

They beat Harare City last week but couldn’t find the same form on Sunday.

Makepekepe had a raucous late penalty appeal waved off after young striker Diego Makurumidze was crippled in the penalty area with the goal was at his mercy.

The seemingly short-handed Green Machine threw new recruit Emmanuel Mandiranga into the fray.

The former Harare City man was hugely involved in the game. Mandiranga headed just over the bar as Makepekepe closed in against the tide with the final action.

Earlier, Rhinos defender Collen Kwaramba intercepted in time to parry William Manondo following a low Phenias Bamusi cross from the left in the 33rd minute.

But Philip Gweva could have punished CAPS United just after the hour mark after a defensive error by central defender Lincoln Mangayira.

Gweva took his time in the penalty area but couldn’t beat goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga from close range.

The Green Machine were forced into the back foot for most of the second half as the Rhinos attacked them from all angles.

They ended the game at one man after defender Machazane, who came on in the 56th minute, was shown a red card just 10 minutes later for a foul on Rhinos striker Eli Illunga.

The army bombarded the gate of the Green Machine, but their efforts failed due to a lack of precision.

CAPS United remained in 13th place in the logs standings with 21 points, while the Rhinos moved up to seventh place with 30 points in 20 games.
