Trump ineligible for 2024 presidency due to Capitol assault

Colorado Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump is ineligible for the US presidency due to his involvement in the January 2021 assault on the Capitol.

LOS ANGELES In a groundbreaking decision, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that former President Donald Trump is ineligible for the US presidency due to his involvement in the January 2021 assault on the Capitol.

The decision, which applies only to the Colorado primary ballot, invokes the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment, barring anyone engaged in insurrection from holding office.

The ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications and could impact the 2024 election.

The court’s 4-3 majority stated, “A majority of the court holds that President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

The decision emphasizes the solemn duty to apply the law, regardless of public reaction.

Noah Bookbinder of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the group behind the original case, hailed the ruling as “a huge moment for democracy” and necessary to protect the future of democracy.

“We will swiftly file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court and a concurrent request for a stay of this deeply undemocratic decision,” said Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign.

Cheung criticized the Colorado panel as a “[George] Soros-funded, left-wing group’s scheme” and accused the Democrat Party of interfering in the election.

Senior Republicans, including Senator Marco Rubio, criticized the ruling.

Rubio likened it to actions for which the US imposes sanctions on other countries.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a 2024 nomination candidate, labeled it an “election interference tactic to silence political opponents.”

The decision comes amidst Trump facing multiple legal challenges, including historic indictments related to the alleged leadership of a criminal conspiracy to steal the 2020 election.

The Colorado ruling is part of a series of 14th Amendment lawsuits against Trump nationwide, with Minnesota’s top court dismissing a similar move in November.
