HARARE – The Magistrates Court has shockingly ordered MDC Alliance youth league official Joana Mamombe to be detained at Chikurubi Prison for her mental state to be examined by state doctors.
The latest persecution comes notwithstanding that Mamombe was granted bail by the High Court.
Magistrate Bianca Makwande on Thursday delivered the shocking ruling that the Harare West legislator who was arrested in May after her release from abduction by suspected state agents, to be thrown in remand for two weeks as part of mental fitness assessment.
The ruling comes after Mamombe, who is accused by the state of faking abduction, told the court she is unable to stand trial because “she is mentally handicapped and unfit” in the aftermath of her persecution.
MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzai Mahere blasted the state for its continued persecution of Mamombe and demanded her immediate release.
“We demand her release and an end to this persecution,” said Mahere.
