HARARE – Major-General (Rtd) Douglas Nyikayaramba, one of the generals who led a military coup that toppled former President Robert Mugabe in 2017, has died aged 64.
Nyikayaramba was fired from the military by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in February 2019 and immediately rewarded with the role of ambassador to Mozambique.
The notorious general succumbed to Covid-19, according to multiple sources.
Nyikayaramba was an ally of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and is the fourth of the coup generals to die of Covid-19 after former air force chief Perrance Shiri, former prison chief Paradzai Zimondi and Sibusiso Moyo, who announced on state television that the army would take over.
