Israeli President Herzog to meet Elon Musk to address online abuse

JERUSALEM Israeli President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to meet with Elon Musk on Monday to address the issue of rising anti-Semitism online, particularly on Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).

Musk has faced criticism for the alleged proliferation of hate speech on the platform since his acquisition.

The meeting will also include representatives of families affected by the recent Hamas attack on October 7.

They will share insights into the horrors of the attack and discuss the ongoing pain and uncertainty faced by those held captive.

“In their meeting, the President will emphasize the need to act to combat rising anti-Semitism online,” Herzog’s office stated.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously urged Musk to take action against anti-Semitism on X.

Netanyahu called on Musk to find ways to prevent and mitigate not only anti-Semitism but also any form of collective hatred on the platform.

Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, acknowledged the challenge of stopping all hate speech before it is posted but expressed a general stance against attacking any group.

X Corp, under Musk’s ownership, is currently involved in legal action against the nonprofit Media Matters, alleging that it has driven away advertisers by portraying the platform as having widespread anti-Semitic content.

Musk has further threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League over its claims that problematic and racist speech on the site has increased since his $44-billion takeover.

The meeting between Herzog and Musk underscores the growing concerns about combating online hate speech and ensuring a safer online environment.
