HWANGE – Power generation has resumed at the Hwange coal-fired power station, after a slight drop after power cuts of up to five hours a day since Wednesday.
Hwange has a nameplate capacity of 920 MW but generates around 360 MW due to aging plants.
Due to a technical fault in the power plant, 368 megawatts were lost on Tuesday evening. Hwange generated 174 MW on Saturday.
With the 1,023 MW from the Kariba hydroelectric station and the 13 MW from Munyati, Zimbabwe’s total electricity production was 1,210 MW – still below the 1,500 MW the country officially needs.
Zimbabwe has experienced deep power cuts of up to 18 hours in the past due to drought and aging equipment at its power stations.
The government has contracted China’s Sinohydro to add two 300 MW units at Hwange, which are expected to be commissioned next year.
