IDA approves funds for Malawi emergency power restoration project

The Board of Executive Directors of the International Development Association (IDA) has approved a credit of US$36 million and a grant of US$24 million from the IDA Crisis Response Window to Malawi for the Emergency Power Restoration project.

BLANTYRE – The Board of Directors of the International Development Association (IDA) has approved, without objection, a US$36 million loan and US$24 million grant from the IDA Crisis Response Window for Malawi to the emergency electricity restoration project.

According to a statement released dated June 17th, 2022 signed by Executive Director Taufila Nyamadzabo, the objective of the project is to rehabilitate and increase resilience of the Kapichira Hydropower Dam and Spillways, and transmission and distribution infrastructure damaged by Tropical Storm Ana.

The project has two components which are Kapichira dam rehabilitation and strengthening, and transmission and distribution network restoration.

Project beneficiaries will include households and businesses, health facilities, schools, water pumping stations as well as Institutions who lost power due to the impact of Tropical Storm Ana.

The credit has a final maturity of 38 years including a grace period of 6 years and the grant will be on Standard IDA terms.
