BLANTYRE – Gabadinho Mhango scored a first half brace all from the penalty spot as Malawi overcame Ethiopia 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in their opening Group D match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the magnificent Bingu National Stadium.
In the presence of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and his vice Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, the Flames started highly and no wonder they were the first on the score sheet through Mhango.
Ethiopia were looking a better side interms of possession but Malawi doubled the lead after Mhango was fouled in the box on 34th minute and it was 2-0 going into the break.
In the second half, Ethiopia tried hard to get back into the game and Abubakar Nasar pulls one back from the penalty spot 66 minutes into the game.
There were no more goals until the last whistle giving a boost to the Flames looking at their next assignment against Guinea next week.
It was the first time in 27 years for a sitting President to watch the Flames play in a competitive match with Bakili Muluzi the last one to do that as he watched Malawi against South Africa and Cameroon in 1995 at Kamuzu Stadium.
