CASABLANCA – Morocco beat South Africa 2-1 in their first 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday night.
Bafana Bafana endured the early pressure and took the lead after Lyle Foster ran over the top of Sithole at the end of a ball after eight minutes and fired into the near corner.
The famed Atlas Lions as Morocco is called looked for an immediate response and were close when a Youssef En-Neyri header from deep in the box forced goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into a superb save.
Bafana managed to contain the pressure and went to halftime leading Morocco 1-0 thanks to Williams.
South Africa stayed on the back foot in the second half and eventually went down when En-Nesyri charged into the box and nodded a well-crafted knockdown from Romain Saiss in the 51st minute.
The visitors conceded more chances in the final nine minutes and finally a second goal after Ayoub El Kaabi volleyed a penetrating cross to the near post.
