MHONDORO – League champions Ngezi Platinum Stars marked their territory ahead of the new season by clinching a 2-0 victory over Chibuku Cup winners Dynamos in the season-opening Castle Challenge Cup at Baobab Stadium.
The clash unfolded with a display of resilience and strategic prowess from Ngezi Platinum Stars, as Claude Mapoka and Elson Mweha secured a goal each, leading their team to claim the coveted trophy.
Reflecting on the match, Ngezi Platinum Stars’ coach Takesure Chiragwi expressed his elation at the triumph, highlighting the significance of adding silverware to the club’s cabinet.
“We are happy and it’s the dream of every coach and every club. When you play a Cup game you really need to win so that you add a lot of silverware in the cabinet, and today we have done it as Ngezi Platinum Stars,” Chiragwi remarked after the match.
Chiragwi also commended the seamless integration of new players into the team, emphasizing the importance of cohesion and adaptability.
“We are pleased and happy with the players. The new players fit in very well and we are happy about that. That is exactly what we want to see,” he added.

The victory not only secured Ngezi Platinum Stars their first silverware of the season but also instilled confidence as they prepare to defend their championship title.
“Obviously when you win that’s how you build the confidence. It’s important for the team and the players to get into the season with a win. It gives them confidence to keep on winning. We are the reigning champions and it’s good for the champions to keep on winning,” Chiragwi affirmed.
While Dynamos displayed moments of dominance, particularly in the early stages of the match, defensive lapses proved costly.
Dynamos coach Genesis Mangombe acknowledged the team’s efforts but highlighted the need to address defensive vulnerabilities.
“The boys are doing very well according to the way we want to play. And now we want to work on those grey areas especially silly mistakes at this level, we are trying to address that,” Mangombe noted.
Despite Dynamos’ commendable performance, Ngezi Platinum Stars’ strategic gameplay and clinical finishing secured them the Castle Challenge Cup, setting a promising tone for the upcoming season.
