Parliament to consider Ramaphosa impeachment as ATM pushes for urgent ouster

South African parliament has taken the first step in considering an impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa in connection with the robbery on his Limpopo farm.

CAPE TOWN – South African parliament has taken the first step in considering an impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa in connection with the robbery on his Limpopo farm.

The African Transformation Movement (ATM), whose motion got the ball rolling, said parliament must be proactive in exercising its oversight role.

ATM said other authorities are being slow in discovering Cyril Ramaphosa’s wrongdoing in relation to the robbery of his Phala Phala farm more than two years ago.

In 2018, parliament passed rules on how to impeach a president following a ruling by the Constitutional Court in the Nkandla saga with ATM set to be the first provider to test this method.

ATM leader Vuyo Zungula believes Ramaphosa broke the law on at least four counts.

Zungula said President Ramaphosa confirmed he was selling livestock while Section 96b prohibits cabinet members from doing other paid work.

“We hope there will be no more delays and we hope this body (independent panel appointed by Speaker of parliament to consider the evidence and to determine whether an inquiry is necessary) will be independent and truly objective in its work,” Zungula said.
