MADRID – In a historic move that reverberates across the footballing world, Racheal Kundananji, the Zambian forward, has rewritten the record books by becoming the most expensive women’s footballer in history.

Her groundbreaking transfer sees her departing Madrid CFF for Bay FC in a deal worth a staggering $860,000 (£685,000).

Kundananji, 23, has penned a four-year contract with Bay FC, with the option of extending for an additional year.

Her move marks a significant milestone not only in her career but also in the broader landscape of women’s football, as she becomes the first African player, male or female, to smash a world transfer record.

The news of Kundananji’s transfer has sent shockwaves throughout the footballing community, eclipsing previous transfer records set by notable players like England midfielder Keira Walsh, who commanded a fee of £400,000 in her move from Manchester City to Barcelona in 2022.

“People in Zambia will be surprised but they will be so happy,” Kundaananji was quoted by BBC Sport Africa.

“I want to give the [Bay FC] fans what they want – to enjoy the games, to enjoy seeing me playing and scoring.”

Kundananji rises from humble beginnings

Bay FC, set to make their National Women’s Soccer League debut this year, will pay an initial $785,000 for Kundananji’s services, with an additional $75,000 in potential add-ons.

Hailing from Zambia, Kundanaanji’s journey to footballing stardom has been remarkable.

Beginning her career with Zambian side Indeni Roses, she later ventured to Kazakhstan’s BIIK Kazygurt in 2019 before making waves in Spain with Eibar and Madrid CFF.

Her prolific goal-scoring exploits – 33 goals in 43 Liga F games for Madrid – coupled with her dynamic style of play, have earned her widespread acclaim.

Kundananji’s impact extends beyond the club level; she has represented Zambia on the international stage, including a memorable appearance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where she showcased her scoring prowess.

With this landmark transfer, Kundananji joins the ranks of other notable talents at Bay FC, including Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala and former Arsenal defender Jen Beattie, signaling the club’s ambitious aspirations in women’s football.

As the women’s game continues to ascend to unprecedented heights, Kundananji’s record-breaking move underscores the growing global recognition and investment in women’s football, setting a new benchmark for future generations of players.
