Russia accuses West of propping crisis in Serbia amid protests

The Russian government's support for Belgrade has, at times, been a contentious issue, especially as Serbia condemned Russia's actions at the United Nations.

MOSCOW, Russia – The Russian government has pointed fingers at Western nations, accusing them of exacerbating tensions in Serbia, a traditionally Moscow-friendly Balkan country currently grappling with protests over alleged election fraud.

The demonstrations unfolded following parliamentary and local elections held on December 17, where President Aleksandar Vucic‘s party claimed a substantial victory.

The unrest reached a peak when protesters attempted to storm the Belgrade city hall on Sunday, expressing their rejection of the election results.

President Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has been at the center of controversy, with allegations of irregularities and fraud undermining the legitimacy of the polls.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized Western involvement, stating, “The attempts of the collective West to destabilize the situation in the country are obvious.”

This assertion aligns with Russia’s ongoing narrative of Western interference in the internal affairs of nations with historical ties to Moscow.

The Kremlin had initially welcomed the election results, expressing hope for the continued strengthening of ties between Russia and Serbia.

However, the recent protests and accusations of electoral misconduct have strained the situation.

Historically, Serbia and Russia share close diplomatic relations, with Belgrade refraining from joining international sanctions against Moscow in response to its actions in Ukraine.

The Kremlin government’s support for Belgrade has, at times, been a contentious issue, especially as Serbia condemned Moscow’s actions at the United Nations.

The timing of the protests and the contested election results coincide with Serbia’s heavy dependence on Russ-ian gas.

The opposition in Belgrade has raised concerns about the fairness of the parliamentary elections, heightening tensions within the country.

The situation remains fluid, with protests continuing and calls for transparent investigations into the alleged election fraud.

The accusations against Western nations by Russia add an additional layer of complexity to the ongoing political turmoil in Serbia.
