State pushes for Sikhala three months detention

The state is seeking to extend the detention of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) lawmaker Job Sikhala for three months.

HARARE – The state is seeking to extend the detention of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) lawmaker Job Sikhala for three months.

Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti told Judge Stanford Mambanje that Sikhala’s detention should be extended until November 21.

However, Sikhala’s lawyer, Jeremiah Bhamu, denied the request.

“We are praying for an earlier trial date. The law requires that the accused be brought to justice as soon as possible. Why not try it before three months?”

“Secondly, the accused is in custody and his trial must of course be handled urgently. If the State wants a long pretrial detention, it must state the reasons for it…So I pray that he will be brought in court within the next two weeks,” Bhamu said.

Sikhala faces charges of incitement to violence in the wake of party activist Moreblessing Ali murder in Nyatsime.

Sikhala was arrested along with members of the CCC, including his colleague Godfrey Sithole, charged with inciting violence to protest against the killing of Moreblessing Ali.
