BULAWAYO – Three people have been killed and two others are being treated in hospital after two vehicles collided in Bulawayo early Wednesday morning.
Police say two VW Golf vehicles were traveling west on the 12th Avenue extension and both drivers were about to turn left onto the Bulawayo Athletics Club (BAC) when the tragedy struck around 2 hours of the morning.
Police said the occupants of the two vehicles were all friends “on a pub crawl”.
Bulawayo Police Inspector Abednico Ncube said: “The vehicle, which was in the right lane and slightly behind, struck the other vehicle and struck it in the rear right near the area of the fuel tank, causing the other driver to lose control of his vehicle, veered off the road and hit a tree.
“Three people died instantly, while two others were taken to United Hospitals in Bulawayo (UBH) for further treatment.”
Ncube said the cause of the accident was “excessive speed under the circumstances.”
“The driver of the vehicle that caused the accident has been charged with manslaughter,” said Ncube.
“Drivers are urged to do everything possible to save lives and avoid unnecessary accidents.”
One of the dead is Ralph Fikile Mguni, who graduated from the University of Zimbabwe last December.
He was a passenger in the vehicle that has strayed from the road.
