BLANTYRE – President Lazarus Chakwera says the SADC Parliamentary Forum 51st Plenary Assembly perfectly aligns with his desire and efforts to promote regional integration towards the end of his tenure as SADC Chair.
Chakwera made this remarks at BICC on Monday after presiding over the official opening of the Forum under the theme “Towards energy Efficiency, Sustainability and Self Sufficiency in the SADC Region.”
“I find it fulfilling that the integration is being strengthened at the lawmaking stage which remains a crucial component in our democratic infrastructure,” Chakwera said.
The Malawi leader highlighted that the theme of the session, his administration expects to tap more into this regional inter-parliamentary think-tank as it explores various strategic thrusts by regional parliaments to achieve sustainable livelihoods through progressive and climate-conscious energy legislation.
“For Malawi – which is already upscaling legislative and infrastructure capabilities in integrating our power sector into the Southern African Power Pool- this session speaks into our development agenda,” he added.
Chakwera therefore said the forum will enhance the synergies Malawi has with its Parliament as they put in place empowering legislation to help us improve energy efficiency and build better communities.
