The 25 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists, including Amos Chibaya, arrested for allegedly attending an event that encouraged public violence have been remanded in detention till Wednesday.

HARARE – 25 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists, including Amos Chibaya, arrested last week for allegedly attending an event that encouraged public violence have been remanded in detention till Wednesday.

According to the allegations, on January 14, 2023, the accused took part in an unauthorised assembly with the intention of committing public violence in response to an invitation posted on social media by one Lancelot Tungwarara.

The accused including party organising secretary Chibaya allegedly met at Budiriro legislator Costa Machingauta’s home while wearing CCC attire and sang the party’s catchphrase, “Ngaapinde Hake Mukomana”.

They were subsequently arrested by police after complaints that they were upsetting the peace in the community.

In court, Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda remanded the suspects in custody before making a decision regarding the request to have the case heard in camera.

However, the State, which was represented by Pardon Dziva, objected to the trial’s separation but approved of holding the hearing in camera.

Dzuda then adjourned the case until today for a decision.

The bail application will be continued after the decision on the request for the matter to be considered in camera has been determined.
