A seven-year jail sentence for robbery was not enough for 38-year old Abdul Imani who hails from Kalonga Village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District as he has been arrested barely a day after being released from prison for defilement.

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi confirmed that Imani defiled a 12-year old Standard 7 girl in Mangochi District during morning hours of June 10th, 2022 at Mpima Forest along Arthur Peter Muthalika Highway.

“According to police findings, Imani was on June 9th, 2022 released from Mangochi Prison after serving a 7-year jail term for robbery and he met the victim on her way to the market to sell pumpkins after being sent by her mother on the said date,” Daudi said.

Daudi further explained that the suspect stopped the minor in the guise of a customer and convinced the victim to follow him to his house saying he would buy all the pumpkins and on their way while passing Mpima Forest, the suspect dragged the victim into the bush where he defiled her despite screaming and shouting for help.

“The victim was later found helpless by passers-by who reported the matter to Mangochi Police Station and she was issued with a referral letter to Mangochi District Hospital where results indicate that the victim was defiled,” she said.

Daudi then highlighted that Imani has been charged with defilement of a girl under the age of 16 which contravenes section 138 of the Penal Code and will appear before court soon.
