Zelensky seeks Balkan support in Albania amid escalating crisis

In a bid to bolster support for his country amidst escalating tensions with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened with Balkan leaders in Albania on Wednesday.

TIRANA – In a bid to bolster support for his country amidst escalating tensions with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened with Balkan leaders in Albania on Wednesday.

The meeting, part of the “Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit,” aimed to secure continued backing and arms supplies for Kyiv as Russia advances its military operations on Ukrainian soil.

Zelensky’s visit to Albania marks his first since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Arriving in Tirana, he engaged in discussions with several regional leaders, including Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama, to explore avenues for enhanced defense cooperation.

“Since the first days of the full-scale invasion, Albania has supported Ukraine in our struggle for freedom and territorial integrity,” Zelensky affirmed following talks with Rama.

“Today we also discussed Ukraine’s defense needs and potential joint arms production.”

Albania, a NATO member since 2009, has been a steadfast advocate for Ukraine but has remained relatively discreet regarding the provision of arms to Kyiv.

However, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken commended Tirana’s support during a recent visit, highlighting its significant contributions to Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Leaders from across the Balkans, including Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, were expected to participate in the summit.

Despite geopolitical complexities, Kosovo’s president affirmed Pristina’s solidarity with Ukraine, emphasizing future recognition contingent upon Ukraine’s freedom.

Zelensky’s diplomatic tour seeks to rally international support amid Ukraine’s urgent need for military aid.

With ammunition supplies dwindling and Russia’s military offensive intensifying, Zelensky has urged Western allies to bolster assistance, stressing the pivotal role of external aid in Ukraine’s defense strategy.

The European Union, confronting the prospect of increased aid responsibilities as US funding diminishes, is contemplating options to address Ukraine’s urgent needs.

However, political divisions within the US Congress, exacerbated by partisan disputes led by figures like former President Donald Trump, have stalled critical aid packages.

Amid geopolitical maneuvering, Zelensky’s visit to Saudi Arabia prior to Albania underscores his efforts to garner support and explore diplomatic solutions.

Mediating between conflicting interests, Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal role in facilitating previous negotiations, including prisoner exchanges, between Ukraine and Russia.

As tensions persist and global stakeholders navigate a complex geopolitical landscape, Zelensky’s diplomatic outreach underscores the urgency of international cooperation in addressing the escalating crisis in Ukraine.
