HARARE – A series of attempts to get employment without success eventually led to the birth of Zimbabwean comedienne Bee Wezhira who has become the talk of the town through skits.

Bee Wezhira who currently boasts of a whooping 268 000 plus followers on Facebook is surprisingly a trained teacher who has tried without success to seek for employment.

However, as fortune will have it, she found herself being one of the beneficiaries of the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in a series of curfews in different nations since early 2020.

While in lockdown, Bee Wezhira, real name Beatrice Mudzingwa found herself wooed by the online frenzy to make short videos for TikTok which somehow resulted in a breakthrough.

“I started doing comedy on TikTok during the lockdown. The response was overwhelming, which prompted me to create a Facebook page that got thousands of followers,” Wezhira said.

Social media has led to changing entertainment trends, with comedy skits becoming one of the most popular genres.

Sketch comedy has become one of the most prominent entertainment genres in digital media, which has seen the rise of various female creators to prominence in the field.

The comedienne, whose sketches mostly revolve around the character of Senzeni, believes comedy is an industry that can make a living, adding that she makes a decent living through sponsorship deals.

“I’m a qualified teacher who doesn’t have a job yet and I use digital media to make a living supporting various businesses,” she said.

Various comic book characters have sprung up on social media over the years in Zimbabwe among them are Babamunini Nijo, Comic Pastor, Bustop TV, Madam Boss, Mai Titi, Zinyamaredehwe, Mupengo Roby and Mbuya VaPiyasoni who never cease to amaze their fans with their hilarious remarks.
